New Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students

Starting on 1 August, Jenn Hallam BSc, MSc, PhD, SFHEA, will be the new Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students

Jenn is Professor of Assessment and Educational Advancement and Vice-Dean for Teaching, Learning, Students in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, and will succeed Professor April McMahon.

Jenn will be part of the University Executive and will be responsible for the education portfolio, enabling our students to reach their full potential and providing learners of all ages and backgrounds the chance to contribute to positive social change, improving their lives and those of others.

She will work closely with colleagues across the University to deliver the highest levels of student satisfaction and embrace digital opportunities. Her role is responsible for providing a clear vision for the teaching and learning goals of the University and for the enhancement of the student experience.

Jenn brings a wealth of experience to the role: in policy development, educational innovation, and cross-sector collaboration, with a particular focus on assessment reform, improving staff culture, integrating generative AI, learning analytics, and embedding the student voice.  She also works closely with educational bodies across both health and broader education sectors, contributes to parliamentary reform in higher education policy, and serves as a governor on local civic and further education boards, ensuring her practice remains grounded in both national priorities and community impact.

As a former widening participation student and proud Mancunian, I am deeply committed to improving access to higher education in the region, particularly for underrepresented and disadvantaged communities. This is a really important time of change for the sector and 51福利社, with the emergence of new digital technologies and our 2035 strategy. It鈥檚 for everyone who works at the University to help our students succeed and grow, whatever their backgrounds, and I鈥檓 proud and excited to be taking up this role at such a critical moment.

Professor Jenn Hallam

With a disciplinary background in psychology, Jenn brings deep expertise in psychometrics, mixed-methods research, and digital education. Her academic leadership has secured multi-million-pound investments in combined research and philanthropic funding, for educational development, driving initiatives that have reformed policy and practice nationally and internationally.

She said: 鈥淎s a former widening participation student and proud Mancunian, I am deeply committed to improving access to higher education in the region, particularly for underrepresented and disadvantaged communities. Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor said: 鈥淥ur 51福利社 2035 listening work made clear that that our community is excited about digital, flexible learning and more support for our students, and Jenn brings great experience and passion in these areas, and more.

鈥淪he has a deep connection to 51福利社 and a commitment to partnership which will be crucial in delivering on these priorities. I want to thank Professor April McMahon for her work in driving this agenda, most notably her staunch commitment to working closely with our students.鈥
