Entry requirements
Academic entry qualification overview
We require a minimum of an Upper Second honours degree or the .
If you have obtained a Lower Second class honours degree we may still consider your application if you have significant relevant research or professional experience. For example three years or more in a public health team.
BSc Public Health students
This course is available to you following successful completion of your BSc with an Upper Second classification.
English language
International students must demonstrate English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system. We ask for English language proof from applicants from non-majority English-speaking countries (a list of majority English speaking countries, as defined by the ).
Specifically, we require a minimum of:
- 6.5 overall (with minimum of 6.0 in all components).
- TOEFL iBT: 90 overall (with minimum of 22 in each component).

If the language of instruction of your first degree was English, but you obtained the degree from a university of a non-majority English-speaking country, the English language requirement may be waived for applicants on our only, provided written evidence is submitted.
The Personal Professional Development CPD programme is not award-bearing and allows you to complete up to three units from the MPH syllabus. After successfully completing this level of the course, students could then be considered for progression to the award-bearing levels of our course, through re-application.

Fees
For entry in the academic year beginning September 2026, the tuition fees are as follows:

MPH (full-time)
UK students (per annum): 拢13,700
International, including EU, students (per annum): 拢29,900
The fees quoted above are fully inclusive of tuition, administration and computational costs. Costs may be incurred for travel, subsistence and accommodation charges during the optional Geneva Winter School.
Fees for entry are subject to yearly review. The University reserves the right to increase your tuition fee by up to 7% each year for courses lasting more than one year, including to reflect rising costs associated with delivering our educational and wider student experience. .
The postgraduate loan is only available if you choose the 1 year full-time or 2 year part-time course. For part-time routes, full-time fees will be split over two or three years as appropriate.
Always contact the admissions team if you are unsure which fee applies to your qualification award and method of attendance.
International student CAS deposit
Self-funded international applicants are required to pay a deposit of 拢2500 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. Some applicants will be required to pay a higher deposit. More information on tuition fee deposits .
Additional expenses
Cost of AP(E)L
The University permits applicants with comparable previous experience to submit an application for consideration of Accreditation Prior (Experiential) Learning (AP(E)L). The maximum AP(E)L is 15 credits to a certificate, 45 credits to a diploma and 60 credits to a master's. If an AP(E)L application is successful, the University charges 拢30 for every 15 credits of AP(E)L. The overall tuition fee is adjusted and administrative charges applied.
Policy on additional costs
All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Advice to applicants
Your application form must be accompanied by the following supporting documents:
- An academic reference on letter headed paper or sent from a work email. A professional reference can be provided in instances where you have been out of university for more than 3 years. We do not contact referees directly so please inform them yourself.
- Copies of official degree certificates (with translations if not in English) if you have already graduated.
- Copies of official university transcripts (with translations if not in English).
- A personal statement (approximately 300-500 words) about why you wish to take this course and how it will affect your personal and professional development. This statement should refer to your current role.
- Full CV, including any voluntary experience.
- Proof of English language proficiency (if required).

Course description
Our on-campus Master of Public Health (MPH) is designed for health professionals and graduates from around the world who want to develop the knowledge and skills needed to address today鈥檚 most pressing public health challenges.
Public health is an evolving, interdisciplinary field that requires professionals who can work across sectors, disciplines and global contexts. This course equips you with a strong foundation in core public health principles while giving you the flexibility to shape your studies around the issues and career pathways that matter most to you.
Alongside essential core units in epidemiology, health promotion, communicable disease control, intercultural public health and population health statistics, you can choose from a wide range of optional units that allow you to specialise in emerging and highly relevant areas of public health. These options span topics such as global health, planetary health, humanitarian response, health economics, health in crisis settings and women鈥檚 health.
A distinctive feature of the course is the opportunity to take optional units delivered by internationally recognised institutes across the University. You may learn from experts at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute on topics such as disaster management and health in humanitarian crises, or develop innovation and leadership skills through entrepreneurship-focused units delivered by the at Alliance 51福利社 Business School - one of the world鈥檚 leading business schools.
This cross-disciplinary approach allows you to combine rigorous public health training with perspectives from humanitarian practice, global policy, and business and innovation, helping you develop the adaptable skillset required to tackle complex health challenges.
Throughout the programme you will:

- apply public health theory and scientific principles to real-world practice;
- build core competencies required for public health careers and further research;

Additional course information
We run induction sessions for all new students starting our public health and primary care courses.
Face-to-face induction
A face-to-face induction is held at the University at the beginning of the academic year.
The induction is designed to introduce you to the content and technology used throughout the course. It is also an opportunity for you to meet academic and support staff.
You are required attend the face-to-face induction. It includes:
- an introduction to the course units;
- an opportunity to meet tutors and administrators;
- an introduction to the online learning environment;
- an introduction to the library and e-resources at 51福利社;
- an opportunity to present your work and hear about work undertaken by other students
Confirmation of attendance on the face-to-face induction will be sought once you have applied for the course.
Teaching and learning
You will learn through a mixture of face-to-face seminars and lectures supplemented by online content. You'll benefit from a learning structure with a recommended pace, with specific deadlines for all summative assessments.
You are required to participate throughout each unit, which all have a mandatory face-to-face element. This includes the induction.
Coursework and assessment
You will use assessed and non-assessed activities to develop key skills and expand your knowledge base. There are no written exams; assessment is based on assignments and other activities such as group work. Assessment methods include presenting your work to a live audience, and responding to questions about your work. You must be able to engage in this to be able to undertake this course.
Course unit details
You are required to take eight 15-credit units and a dissertation for 60 credits, across the year. This is to allow you to benefit from the full breadth of public health practice.
The master's dissertation is a focused, critical and reflective body of writing that seeks to add to the understanding of a particular problem or question. It is an opportunity to expand knowledge and expertise in an area of study, through in-depth, critical and reflective thinking, relevant to the focus of the dissertation.
You will choose from a range of dissertation models designed to cater for different work situations and interests.
Semester 1
You will take three mandatory course units:
- Epidemiology for Public Health Practice
- Health Promotion Theory and Methods
- Communicable Disease Control
You will also choose one option from the following choices:
- Global Health
- Humanitarianism and Conflict Response: Inquiries (run by the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI))
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Humanitarian Crises (run by the HCRI)
- Qualitative Research Methods (online*)
Semester 2
You will take two mandatory course units:
- Practical Statistics for Population Health
- Intercultural Public Health
You will also choose two options from the following. You must choose one option from set A and one option from set B

- Systemic Approaches to Disaster Management (this course unit is run by the HCRI)
